About the role of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee
The Norwegian Helsinki Committee plays a central role in coordinating information-sharing and promoting bilateral cooperation between civil society organisations in Norway and the beneficiary countries. Given the sheer size of the Norwegian voluntary sector – consisting of 115 000 non-governmental and non-profit organisations – the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has contracted the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC) to facilitate contact and cooperation between NGOs in the 15 beneficiary countries and Norway.
The Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC) is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation which monitors compliance with the human rights provisions of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) within all OSCE signatory states and supports initiatives to strengthen democracy and civil society.
NHC keeps Norwegian civil society informed about the NGO programmes in all the 15 beneficiary countries. The human rights NGO also serves as a point of contact for Norwegian NGOs interested in participating in partnership projects. To facilitate partnerships, NHC manages the website www.ngonorway.org where NGOs from the beneficiary countries may search for relevant partners in Norway.
NHC is also responsible for recruiting and organising participation by Norwegian NGOs at launch conferences for the NGO programmes in the beneficiary countries. In addition, the NHC arrange conferences and seminars on topics relevant for the NGO programmes.
NHC cooperates closely with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norwegian embassies, programme operators, donor programme partners and the Financial Mechanism Office.
