Conference on pregnancy & adult congenial heart disease PDF Print
ImageWith the support of the Cypriote NGO Fund, a conference on pregnancy and adult congenial heart disease was held in Nicosia 21 November 2009.

Over the last couple of decades, medical advances in the treatment of children with congenital heart disease have led to remarkable improvement in the survival and hemodynamic status of these children. Many are growing, working and contributing as active members of society well into their adult years. This number is constantly increasing.

One important aspect of adult life is parenthood. While in the past, young women with this type of illness could not plan on a normal pregnancy, today most of the young women who were operated for congenital heart disease have a practically normal hemodynamic status and enjoy all benefits of a low-risk pregnancy.

The Norwegian association on Congenital Heart defects has been active in Cyprus, both as a participant at last years launching of the Cypriote NGO Fund, and as a norwegian partner for their Cypriote sister organisation. Their project aims at increasing the knowledge and awareness about both adult and pregnancy congenital heart diseases.

The conference in Nicosia last week aimed at helping sensitize all local proffesionals in matters especially related to women with suboptimal hemodynamic status, a group of women that are extra burdened during their pregnancy. The conference was supported by the Cypriote NGO Fund.
